About The Bonfire

More than 100 years ago, the European tradition of Christmas Eve bonfires migrated to Louisiana. The fires are said to light the way for Papa Noël, or to light the way to midnight Mass. For more than 25 years, the bonfire has been a long standing Algiers’ holiday tradition, and while the event happens early in December, the ambiance of a holiday event fills the atmosphere. This staple New Orleans event is organized by local organizations and funded by both the community and private sector businesses.
