How To Keep Bugs Away From Your Trash Can

Your trash can attract cockroaches, mosquitoes, flies and other bugs. Discovering maggots in your garbage or trash can can be fairly disgusting. There are a few things you can do to keep those critters away.

What Keeps Away Insects

Make sure you keep the trash can lid closed at all times. That’s how you can prevent flies from laying eggs in your garbage. Putting a little vinegar in your trash will also repel flies. Other natural repellents include cloves. The smell of the aromatic flower buds will keep ants and some other bugs away. Experts also suggest making balls of boric acid and powdered milk and adding those to your trash if you have problems with cockroaches. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in standing water. In order to keep them away, make sure you do not throw stuff away that has moisture trapped inside. As you know, food also attracts bugs. If you put food waste in your trash, put it in a sealing plastic bag, or some other sealed container before throwing it out.

How To Treat Your Trash Can

If natural repellents do not work, you can always spray the inside of your trash can with a bug killer or bug repellents. Wash your garbage or trash can regularly and put some vinegar in the water you use to wash it with.  You could also put a newspaper at the bottom of your can that will help absorb moisture. If you want, you could even line your can with a plastic bag to keep it clean.
