SCHOOL PREP TIPS… ARE YOU READY FOR THE BEGINNING OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR?

The start of a new school year can be a wonderful occasion for some students and dreaded by others.

For the parents and guardians, it means coordinating schedules and making numerous purchases. Every transition in life goes much more smoothly when you’re well prepared. Most schools provide lists of supplies to be purchased by each student for the first day of school. Of course, if you’re required to wear a school uniform, there’s generally a uniform day at each school or an assigned uniform store to acquire the necessary uniform items. These dates and lists of requirements are usually sent to each student’s home during the summer, well in advance of the start of school. If possible, get a head start before the crowds of last minute shoppers and you’ll have spared yourself a considerable amount of stress.

Before the end of summer, schedule all doctors appointments, including dental and eye doctors.

Make sure all of the kiddos shots are up to date, and get the flu shot as well as other vaccinations they might need before they spend hours in the classrooms each day with other kiddos. This is also a wonderful time of year to assess your medicine cabinet, throwing away expired over-the-counter medications and replacing what you might have to dispose of in the process. Children with special medical needs should get letters for their schools from their physicians documenting those special needs, and they should carry with them a supply of their medications. It’s also wise for kiddos with medical problems to wear a medical alert tag at all times, especially throughout the school year.

Remind the students that keeping their hands clean will lessen the spread of germs. Hand washing is a wonderful habit to get them into at home because they will most likely carry that habit out at school as well. The goal of parents and schools alike is to keep the students healthy and safe, as well as to have a successful school year.
