Smelly Trash Cans
The Odor Coming From Your Trash Can Is Not Only Annoying, But Could Be Harmful To Your Health
It’s hot and humid in New Orleans this time of year and these conditions can make your trash can extra smelly. You’ll notice the odor coming from your trash can especially after a downpour. Trash cans tend to be dark, hot and moist, an environment where bacteria and other unhealthy things including germs thrive. The decaying garbage in your trash can can also be a breeding ground for mold, viruses and sometimes even maggots. Opening a smelly garbage can, even if its only for a few seconds to put some trash in, can be fairly disgusting. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to keep your trash can from stinking up your neighborhood.
What You Can Do
Try to wash your trash can at least a couple of times a year. Use soap and a brush to scrub down the inside of the container to get rid of bacteria. Sprinkle some baking soda at the bottom of your trash can will neutralize odors. The remedy will not necessarily help you get rid of the whatever is making your trash can smelly, but it will give you sometime to figure it out. Of course you can also just get some odor eliminating chemical spray. Again, this will just mask the problem, but at least it will make the trip to the trash can easier.
